PSN Video Service

PSN Video Service

Published by Ryan Maffit on Jul 17th 2008 At e3, Sony unveiled the latest service to be supported by the PSP – a movie and television show download service. You can rent TV episodes for $2 and movies for as low as $3, depending on the age of the movie and if you are renting it in high-def or standard-def. So, when does this cool sounding new service make it’s way into the hands of PSP owners? Surprisingly, even though it was only unveiled at the conference a few days ago, the PSN Video Service is already live and ready to go for the PSP.

First of all, you need to make sure that you have the 4.05 update for your PSP hardware.Next, go to the PlayStation store and there’s a whole new section devoted to the movie and television media service. Select which movie or show you want to download, and you are on your way. The download speed will ultimately depend on your internet connection, but according to the majority of users, it is fairly decent. With a combination of wireless and cable internet, you can expect a TV show to download in 5-10 minutes and a movie to download in about 10-30 minutes.

Keep in mind when buying your content that these purchases don’t give you permanent access to the content – you will no longer have access to it in 14 days, or 24 hours after you first play the file, whichever comes first.

The price for the TV shows seems to be a bit steep, seeing as it would cost more to buy each episode of the season separately than to just go out and buy the season DVD. However, if you are on the go a lot, the movie downloading feature seems to be perfect, in both price and usability.
