Lego Batman Preview Available Tuesday

Published by Guru on Sep 21st 2008 Lego Batman is scheduled to be released this Tuesday for several platforms, among them the PSP. Developer Traveller's Tales is bringing us the caped crusader in Lego form. Because the Batman storyline has been done in so many different directions over the years, it'll be interesting to see which direction the developers will take with the Lego version of the game. From screenshots and preplay videos, it appears that Gotham City closely resembles the vision of Tim Burton, which is surprising, considering Lego Batman is aimed to be a kid-friendly game, with a similar rating.

Lego Batman has the same co-op dynamic as Lego Star Wars, but this time the main characters are Batman of Robin. The only real difference between the Jedi knights and Batman and Robin is the way they fight. The lightsabres have been ditched in lieu of hand-to-hand combat and an assortment of high-tech gadgets that would make James Bond jealous. As you can imagine, it was a challenge for the development team to recreate hand to hand moves with such short arms and legs, but the team overcame the challenge with a new series of moves, many of which include grapples and throws. In addition to the new hand to hand combat and theme, gameplay also hinges around Batman's arsenal of gadgets, with the Batarang being a standard among toys. Another new feature of the Lego Batman is the new suits Batman and Robin can utilize. These suits are different in that they enable the characters to access different parts of the level. Batman has a demolition suit which enables him to blow up big objects and lay traps, as well as an extendable cape which allows him to fly over long distances. Of course, Robin wasn't left out of the mix, as he has obtained a magnetic suits which allows him to run up walls made of metal, and a tech-suit which can be used to take control of other mechanical objects, such as an RC car.

Lego Batman remains true to the source material, but like its predecessors of different genres, it is still a Lego game. This means most of the puzzles included in the game are based around piecing together bricks which help you build items to get through the levels. Batman can piece together such things as a mini helicopter in order to get around the roofs of Gotham, as well as tightropes from building to building. In addition, Batman will be able to use several of his gadgets while climbing, including the batarang.

One of the better features of Lego Batman is the ability to play not only as Batman and Robin, but also a plethora of bad guys from the Batman world, including The Joker, Catwoman, The Penguin, Harley Quinn, and the scarecrow. Once you've defeated each of these bad guys in the main game, they become playable characters. All in all, we're looking forward to Lego Batman and we're sure it'll shape up to fit in Lego Star Wars shoes quite nicely. Expect to see it on store shelves this Tuesday.
